Defying direct orders from Tokyo, Japanese consul Chiune Sugihara issued transit visas to thousands of Jewish refugees in Lithuania in 1940. He wrote visas by hand for 18-20 hours a day, often throwing them out of train windows as he left. He saved more Jews than Oskar Schindler.
After the war, he lived in poverty and was honored by Israel as Righteous Among the Nations.
